Wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator allegedly shot by son at home, police say
The wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was allegedly shot by the couple's son at their home in Virginia on Sunday night, according to police.
Mia Bieniemy, 57, is in stable condition following the shooting, Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman told ABC affiliate station WJLA-TV Monday.
The Loudon County Sheriff's Office said Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, of Ashburn, Virginia, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
The investigation is ongoing, and there is not believed to be any threat to the public, the sheriff's office said in a statement.
Mia Bieniemy called 911 after the shooting, according to Chapman.
"I'll just say she was shot multiple times, and we have to go through an entire investigation to determine where everybody was, what they did, what prompted it, and how it all transpired. We're conducting that investigation right now," Chapman told WJLA.
The next scheduled court date for Elijah Bieniemy is a preliminary hearing on Aug. 31, according to WJLA.
The Chiefs told ABC News in a statement Monday that the club, "is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family."
"Out of respect for their privacy, we won't have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them," the statement said.
Eric Bieniemy, 56, was re-hired by the Chiefs in January of this year as offensive coordinator, a position he held previously from 2018 to 2022.
After leaving the Chiefs in 2022, Bieniemy coached for the Chicago Bears, the Washington Commanders and the UCLA Bruins, according to the NFL.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said in a press conference Monday from the team's training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, that the team's "thoughts and prayers" are with the Bieniemy family.
"I can't get into details on it, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it," Reid said. "He's got a great support group here, as does his family, as needed, and then we'll just let time take care of it from there."
Reid said Eric Bieniemy is taking time away from the Chiefs' training camp to be with his family.
