Kate Middleton climbs 3 highest peaks in UK in 24 hours
Just over one year after announcing that her own cancer was in remission, Kate, the Princess of Wales, climbed the three highest mountains in the United Kingdom over the weekend to raise money and awareness for the hospital where she underwent cancer treatment.
Kate, 44, completed the National Three Peaks Challenge, climbing 23 miles solo across the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours, Kensington Palace confirmed Sunday.
At the end of her climb, Kate was greeted by her husband, Prince William, and their three children -- Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte -- as well as her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, and her brother, James Middleton.
The palace on Sunday shared a photo on social media showing Kate during the climb. The photo was accompanied by a caption personally written by the princess.
"I have taken on the National Three Peaks Challenge, not simply as a physical endeavor but as a chance to explore life beyond diagnosis and to give something back," she wrote, in part.
Kate completed the challenge to support The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, which is operated by the London hospital where she underwent cancer treatment.
Kate and William are also joint patrons of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.
Kate revealed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing preventative chemotherapy. She has not shared publicly the type of cancer with which she was diagnosed.
Nearly a year later, in January 2025, she announced she was in remission and gradually resumed public engagements.
"Lots of people have asked me why I'm doing this challenge, and partly -- it's personal. I'm so grateful to be here, to be strong enough to walk these hills," Kate said in a video shared on social media Sunday by Kensington Palace. "But, more importantly, it's to give something back and acknowledge, really, all the incredible work going on up and down this country."
She continued, "I've met some incredible people -- those people who are living with and beyond cancer -- and I know personally how difficult that journey is. And I really wanted to use this opportunity as my way of contributing to all the wonderful work that's going on, and in particular to support The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity -- an organization very dear to me, but who do extraordinary work supporting those living with and beyond the disease."
The three mountains that Kate climbed include Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales.
Kate ascended over 10,000 feet in the three climbs, according to the palace.
